Luxury Capsules

Mainichi news is reporting that many of Tokyo’s Capsule Hotels are now going upscale with special VIP rooms.

Apparently this doesn’t sit well with purists. Although it’s not clear who is more upset – supporters of Capsule hotels or supporters of VIP rooms. One hotel investor is quoted as saying:

“The current situation sullies the concept of a VIP Room,”

I’m guessing that Capsule regulars are probably more concerned that prices for traditionally minimalist accomodations are bound to rise if this trend becomes widespread.

Affordable Accomodations In Tokyo

Tokyo has a reputation for being one of the most expensive cities in the world. Most travelers to Japan plan on having their hotel bill consume a large portion of their travel expenses. Well, it doesn’t have to be that way as Planet Tokyo points out in a great article on Cheap Hotels in Tokyo.

If you’re willing sacrifice a bit of luxury and a private bathroom you can easily find rooms in Tokyo that are quite affordable. As the article points out the New Koyo offers some particularly low rates (as low as ¥2,500 for a single).

It pays to do some research before planning your trip.
